Landscape Department | Featured Outdoor Room

Located along the James River in Richmond, Virginia, this historic five-acre property offers unique views of both the river and surrounding woodlands. Once a vacation destination for city dwellers in the 1920’s, it is now home to a family of six.

It was the client’s desire to create an outdoor room along the rear of the residence for entertaining family and friends. The design and footprint of the house created a courtyard feeling in that area showcasing a view through a natural valley leading to the river.

The landscape design process began with an initial meeting at the property and included measurements and site analysis. The architect’s “vision” for the project evolved into a large space, similar to an indoor room, incorporating areas for both dining and entertaining. Defined by a sitting wall and planting area, the dining space was placed just off the kitchen to create a seamless flow of indoor and outdoor space. The larger entertaining space, though still connected to the dining area, was placed further away from the house, allowing filtered views of the river and an adjacent valley. A curved sitting wall served as a backdrop.

The final piece of the project was plant material to add color, texture, and seasonal interest. Japanese maple, serviceberry, laurels, and knockout roses were among the selected plants.

The project was designed and installed by Sneed’s during the summer of 2009 and was constructed of natural stone.
