Hickories and Kanuchi
Nov 23, 1pm
Service Description
Hickories are invaluable trees for wildlife and humans alike, as well as being beautiful landscape trees. Will and Bethany will teach us more about these trees and demonstrate how to process hickory nuts into Kanuchi, a hickory-based soup, porridge or drink. Cherokee peoples traditionally made Kanuchi by pounding the nuts with a Kanona, a mortar made from a hollowed-out log, which is what we will be using for this demonstration! At the class's end, everyone will have a chance to try (and hopefully fall in love) with this indigenous drink. This class is part of their Nurture with Native Plants class series, which reminds and shows us the ways that native plants heal and feed our bodies and ecosystems.
